PREMIUM Project 2026-2027: LIOF-Einstein Telescope

Design a practical Einstein Telescope Technology Transfer Programme that turns cutting-edge scientific technologies into real-world applications by connecting researchers, businesses and entrepreneurs across sectors.

    The Project:

Einstein Telescope: from breakthrough science to breakthrough applications

The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed next-generation European research infrastructure for gravitational-wave astronomy. Building it will push technologies such as precision sensing, photonics, cryogenics, vacuum systems, advanced materials, artificial intelligence, and (sub-)surface engineering to their limits.

But how can breakthroughs developed for Einstein Telescope (ET) find their way into other industries and society?

In this PREMIUM project, you will design an Einstein Telescope Technology Transfer Programme. You will benchmark leading science-driven technology-transfer models, identify promising ET technology domains, explore concrete technology-to-market pathways, and map the actors needed to turn ideas into applications.

Your challenge is not simply to describe opportunities but to create a practical programme that connects researchers, companies, entrepreneurs, and innovation organisations.

Working with LIOF Einstein Telescope Valorisation and the Einstein Telescope Expertcommittee on Valorisation and Impact gives you access to a unique cross-border science and innovation ecosystem.

This project is ideal for students who enjoy combining technology, business, entrepreneurship, policy, and regional innovation and who want to contribute to one of Europe’s most ambitious future research infrastructures.

  • The Client:

LIOF is the regional development agency for Limburg and supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Within LIOF, the Einstein Telescope Valorisation team works with public authorities, universities, research institutes, and companies across the countries of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR) to strengthen the region’s candidacy for the Einstein Telescope (ET), a proposed next-generation European research infrastructure for gravitational-wave astronomy.

The project office supports the development of the bid, regional ecosystem, valorisation and impact strategy, and cross-border cooperation around ET, with the ambition to translate this major scientific infrastructure into long-term scientific, technological, economic, and societal value for the region and Europe.

Students should be comfortable working across science, technology, business and regional innovation perspectives. An interest in deep-tech innovation, technology transfer, entrepreneurship or research infrastructures is desirable. The project may involve interviews with external stakeholders, comparative desk research and the translation of technical information into practical innovation concepts.
